Nevado Ojos del Salado (6,893 m), the highest active volcano in the world, is the great objective of this expedition. But the chance of reaching its summit begins long before the final push: it depends on advancing gradually, listening to your body and arriving at the mountain well acclimatised.

Over fourteen days we travel across the Puna de Atacama, among salt flats, high-altitude lagoons and mountains rising above six thousand metres. From Copiapó, the route advances through Laguna Santa Rosa, the Siete Hermanas and Pastillitos peaks, and Laguna Negro Francisco, until reaching Laguna Verde (4,310 m), which will be our base for the higher ascents. Along the way we may spot wildlife typical of this landscape, such as vicuñas, guanacos, flamingos and condors.

Here acclimatisation has two summit objectives: the Copiapó volcano (6,052 m) and Barrancas Blancas (6,119 m). These are ascents with value of their own that let us gain experience and altitude adaptation before taking on Ojos del Salado.

From Laguna Verde we organise the summit days according to how the group is progressing, the weather and the state of the access and mountain routes. The itinerary includes two reserve days, days 12 and 13, to adjust the plan before returning to Copiapó.

It is an invitation to experience high-altitude mountaineering in its full dimension: sharing camps and refuges, travelling through remote landscapes and taking on three summits above 6,000 metres, with Ojos del Salado as the final destination.

  • Weather conditions. The high Andes of the Atacama Desert have one of the most arid climates on the planet. Low humidity, intense solar radiation, a wide temperature range and constant wind exposure characterize the environmental conditions for much of the year.
  • High-mountain guides who are members of ANGM Chile, holding UIAGM/IFMGA and ANGM certifications

Participation requirements

To take part you need a level of fitness in keeping with the program's demands and a willingness to follow the guide's instructions in the field. No prior technical experience is required unless the program states otherwise. If you have any health condition, tell us when booking so we can advise you; if in doubt, consult your doctor.

Safety and mountain conditions

This is a mountain activity, subject to the conditions of the environment. The guide in charge continuously assesses the weather, the terrain and the group, and decides to adjust the route, the pace or to suspend the activity when safety requires it. Coming back safely always comes before reaching the objective.

Changes due to weather conditions

The mountain decides whether the activity can take place. A reliable forecast is available a few days beforehand, so we are flexible with advance bookings: if conditions do not allow a safe departure, we look for an alternative date or refund your deposit. If we start the program by mutual agreement and conditions prevent reaching the objective, the activity is considered completed.

Equipment the participant brings

The program includes the necessary technical equipment; you bring your mountain clothing, suitable footwear and personal items (backpack, water, snack, sun protection). The exact detail is in the program checklist, and if you are missing anything we have rental gear: let us know when booking.

Suggested clothing

Dress in layers for changeable mountain weather: a thermal base layer, an insulating layer and a windproof, waterproof outer layer, plus a hat, gloves and suitable socks. Footwear must be suited to the program's terrain. The full detail is in the checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Each program closes its online bookings some days before the start date: from 2 days for the 1–2 day ascents and treks, and more days for longer programs (up to several weeks for the expeditions). This margin lets us coordinate in time the logistics external to HAE —transport, refuges, permits, muleteers and other third-party services— essential to run the program safely. If you're interested in a date closer to the cutoff, write to us and we'll assess feasibility.

Yes. Booking in advance is the best way to secure our availability for your program. Mountain conditions cannot be predicted weeks or months ahead. That's why, as the activity approaches, we continuously monitor the forecast and keep you informed in good time about how conditions are developing. If everything is favorable, we confirm the departure; if conditions are not suitable, we'll assess the available options with you — whether rescheduling the activity for another date, running an alternative program, or cancelling the booking in accordance with our policies.

If you travel as a tourist, you only need a standard tourist visa for Chile (depending on your nationality). However, for climbs in the border regions (such as Ojos del Salado) we must arrange special border permits. This permit is part of the logistics we handle for the expedition: once you send us your details during the booking process, we have everything needed to arrange it directly with DIFROL (the National Directorate of State Borders).

The expedition begins in Copiapó, the nearest major city to Ojos del Salado. The closest airport is CPO (Desierto de Atacama Airport). We can also arrange pickups in nearby towns such as Caldera or Bahía Inglesa if preferred (both with accommodation near the Pacific coast), but our recommendation is to start in the main city — to make departure easier and buy the last supplies — and finish the trip by the sea!

We recommend having previous altitude experience and being in good physical condition (this is essential). Since it is crucial to understand how your body reacts to altitude, the more prepared you are, the greater your chances of success on Ojos del Salado. Climbing and hiking while gaining altitude gradually, as high as you can before arriving in Copiapó, is the best way to prepare your body for this expedition.

We provide all meals at the camps or refuges during the expedition, so you don't need to worry about what you'll eat while climbing and trekking, or when we are in towns or cities. Meals are designed for optimal nutrition for high-altitude mountaineering. We offer a variety of local dishes and cater to special dietary requirements (e.g. vegetarian, gluten-free). Please let us know of any preference or restriction during the booking process. On our trips we don't usually work with cooks or assistants, so we do it together with you, as partners: clients and guides cook and manage everything that needs doing at the camps. Accommodation during the expedition is in tents (two people per tent); where refuges are available, we use them in shared rooms. Private tents and rooms are available at an additional cost and subject to availability.

No, there will not be a doctor during the expedition. We run the logistics of our expeditions the same way we like to climb: as minimalist as possible, striking a balance between comfort and safety. So although there are no specialised doctors in the group, the responsible guide is trained to manage altitude sickness and to adjust the itinerary as needed. The guides have experience managing the group's physical condition at high altitude.

As we generally work with small groups, we often offer private trips. We can arrange a trip for a single participant, but bear in mind that if you are the only one, you are responsible for the full cost of the expedition. If that's fine with you and no one else joins, we can easily tailor everything to you; if someone else joins, it lowers the cost per participant, always in accordance with the guide-to-client ratio defined for the program.

Although reaching the summit of Ojos del Salado is the ultimate goal, the experience itself goes beyond the summit. We adjust the itinerary if necessary and within the possibilities, making sure you have a safe and rewarding experience even if the summit attempt is not successful. The journey through the Andes and the Atacama Desert is incredibly enriching, and your safety and enjoyment are our priorities.

Cancelling expeditions is rare, but it can be due to unforeseen logistical problems before departure (for example, being unable to reach the starting point because of a major natural event) or to guide issues near the start of the trip (for example, illness or injury). During the expedition, it may be due to matters such as altitude sickness or weather conditions that force us to adjust the itinerary, though this is part of what can happen on a high-altitude expedition.
